Music Album Review:: Zee Avi

I'm rather skeptical when it comes to local music artists. However, over the years I've come to like a few, namely Liang, Juwita Suwito, Karen Kong and lately, Zee Avi aka KokoKaina aka Izyan Alirahman from Miri, Sarawak. Born in 1986, she studied Fashion Design in London - probably where she got her perfect English slang as compared to... non-English speaking people.

She had a lucky break when Brushfire Records (Jack Johnson owns it) spotted her on YouTube in 2007. She then released a self titled debut album on May 19, 2009. The rest is then history.

I like her music because her voice is clear and really melodious. You can sing along to her songs too. She sounds like how a female Jack Johnson would sound. Her Malay-English song, Kantoi doesn't sound Malay at all. (fyi, 'Kantoi' in English means 'So Screwed') You can hear Bitter Heart played over the radio. Check out her YouTube page.

Track Listing:
  1. "Bitter Heart" [YouTube]
  2. "Poppy" [YouTube]
  3. "Honey Bee" [YouTube]
  4. "Just You And Me" [YouTube]
  5. "Is This The End"
  6. "Monte"
  7. "Kantoi" [YouTube]
  8. "I Am Me Once More"
  9. "First of the Gang to Die" (Morrissey Cover)
  10. "Darlin' It Ain't Easy"
  11. "The Story"
  12. "Let Me In"
Do try listening to her. I like all her songs. If I had to name a favourite, it would be "Let Me In" cause it has piano in it. It's my addiction for the week of 12th April 2010.
